ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius – Eight students from St. Eustatius have left the island to continue their studies in the Netherlands after completing their secondary education.
The students departed on Saturday, August 1, and will enroll in a range of university, college and vocational education programmes. They were seen off at F.D. Roosevelt Airport by Policy Advisor for Education Edris Bennett-Merkman, who met with the students and their families before departure.
Upon arrival in the Netherlands, the students were welcomed by TuranGoeloe, which is providing temporary hotel accommodation and support to help them settle into their new environment.
Eligible Statia students pursuing further education may qualify for financial assistance under the island’s Study Allowance Ordinance, including a monthly subsistence allowance of up to US$600, subject to the applicable conditions.
Improved access to higher education
According to the Public Entity St. Eustatius, the support is part of ongoing efforts within the education portfolio of Island Commissioner Reuben Merkman to improve access to higher education and ensure students are aware of the assistance available. The government also said Bennett-Merkman will remain in contact with students studying abroad to provide guidance where needed.
