New café opens in Windwardside as local couple invests in Saba’s future

WINDWARDSIDE, Saba – A new café has opened its doors in Windwardside, marking a notable addition to Saba’s small but growing culinary landscape. The lunchroom, operating under the name Island Paradise, began welcoming customers this week following a short preparation period and a soft opening.
The initiative comes from Patrick Hassell and Mirielle Marten-Hassell, who recently returned to Saba after spending many years in the Netherlands. With the opening, the couple not only introduces a new food concept to the island, but also contributes to a broader sense of local entrepreneurship.
According to the owners, one of the most striking aspects in the first days has been the positive and often enthusiastic response from the community. Many residents have expressed appreciation for the fact that local entrepreneurs are choosing to return to Saba and invest in their own island.
The café focuses on fresh, accessible breakfast and lunch options and aims to offer a welcoming setting in the heart of Windwardside. In addition to daily service, the space can also be used for small gatherings and events.
The opening attracted attention from the local community, with family members including Patrick’s father Vernon Hassell and his wife Glenda Hassell present during the first days of operation.
Island Paradise is currently open several days per week, with plans to expand to a full seven-day schedule in the near future.
Positive development
With limited dining options on the island, the addition of a new café is seen as a positive development for both residents and visitors, while also highlighting a renewed willingness among Sabans to invest locally.
