KRALENDIJK — Last week, the island’s trade unions held a press conference about the upcoming celebration of May 1st, Labor Day. This year, the event will take the form of a drive-through, allowing participants to briefly meet and greet one another.
Four representatives of the five involved unions – Tafila Janga (ABVO Bonaire), Cherel Kwidama (AFBW), Mavis Abrahams (SIMABO), and Errlon Giromus (NAPB) – outlined the plans. The celebration will take place between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
Kwidama emphasized the importance of celebrating together: “May 1st is a meaningful day for workers. After years without a proper celebration, it’s time to revive the tradition.”
Low Participation
The trade unions have long observed with concern that there is very little enthusiasm among workers on the island to engage in Labor Day activities. The drive-through celebration is therefore an attempt to give the holiday a fresh new approach.
