ORANJESTAD – The world’s shortest commercial runway has received a major safety upgrade. AGL Engineering SA has completed the renovation and commissioning of the taxiway lighting system at Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport, Saba, the smallest International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)-compliant airport in the Caribbean Netherlands.
The project replaced outdated solar lights with modern ADB Safegate etes LED 6.6A blue lights, improving both visibility and reliability. The work was carried out entirely at night to avoid any disruption to daytime flight operations and was completed in just 30 nights.
According to AGL Engineering, the upgrade enhances safety, compliance, and operational reliability for one of the world’s most technically demanding airports, known for its dramatic 400-meter runway surrounded by steep cliffs.
