KRALENDIJK – Work on Kaya Soeur Bartola, the main access road to the hospital on Bonaire, is now in its final phase. This brings an end to a major infrastructure project that took considerably longer than the originally planned eight weeks.
The reconstruction began on March 23, 2026, and was carried out by the Bonairean Road Construction Company (BWM) on behalf of the Public Entity Bonaire. According to the information board at the site, the project was expected to take eight weeks, but the work ultimately ran significantly over schedule.
During the reconstruction, the road received more than just a new asphalt layer. The subbase was also reinforced and new underground cables were laid, ensuring the road is better prepared for the future.
The poor condition of the road had been a thorn in the side of many residents for years. Especially during heavy rainfall, the numerous potholes and large puddles on the damaged road surface caused frustration among road users. In some cases, the poor state of the road also led to vehicle damage.
Since Kaya Soeur Bartola serves as the primary access route for ambulances, patients, visitors, and hospital staff, a thorough reconstruction had long been called for.
Now that the new asphalt has largely been laid and the final work is being completed, the reopening of the road appears to be only a matter of time. This will bring an end to a long period of traffic disruption around the hospital.
