Bario Limpi starts this weekend: waste containers in twelve neighborhoods

KRALENDIJK – From Friday, September 18 through Sunday, September 20, waste containers will be placed in twelve neighborhoods across Bonaire. The Public Entity Bonaire (OLB) and Selibon are organizing the first round of Bario Limpi this year. The goal: fewer illegal waste dumps and cleaner neighborhoods.

The final day, Sunday, September 20, coincides with World Cleanup Day — the day when millions of people around the world clean up their neighborhood. Anyone who brings waste to the container in their own neighborhood that weekend contributes to a cleaner Bonaire and joins a worldwide movement. "A clean neighborhood starts with ourselves" is the message the OLB aims to reinforce this year. Illegal waste dumping remains one of the greatest threats to public health and liveability in residential areas.

The containers are intended for bulky household waste: furniture, mattresses, old appliances, household items, leftover wood, and small amounts of garden waste. Hazardous or special waste is not accepted. This includes construction debris, paint and chemicals, oil products, car batteries, asbestos, medical waste, large quantities of bio-manure, and gas cylinders. Separate rules apply for these items. Selibon and the designated collection points do accept this type of waste.

Where are the large waste containers located?

The OLB urges residents to bring their waste to the container in their own neighborhood throughout the weekend, keep the streets clean, and refrain from dumping waste in nature. On Sunday, September 20, residents can also actively participate in World Cleanup Day.
