
THE BOTTOM, Saba – Visible smoke from the Makana ferry as it approached Fort Bay Harbor on Thursday morning caused concern among residents and passengers, prompting questions about the vessel’s safety. The ferry was traveling from St. Eustatius (Statia) to Saba when the smoke was observed.
According to the Public Entity Saba, the smoke was caused by a mechanical issue involving the ferry’s turbo and was not the result of a fire. The ferry arrived safely at Fort Bay Harbor without incident.
Following an inspection, passengers were allowed to reboard the vessel for its scheduled departure. Those who decided not to continue their journey were offered a refund.
The incident nevertheless prompted reactions on social media, with some residents saying they would not feel comfortable travelling on the Makana following the mechanical problem.
