Emancipation Day celebrated with remembrance, reflection and community on St. Eustatius

ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius – Residents of St. Eustatius came together on Wednesday to commemorate Emancipation Day with a full day of remembrance, reflection and celebration, honouring the legacy of the island’s ancestors and their enduring contribution to the island’s history.
Held under the theme “From Freedom Granted to Freedom Won,” the programme began early in the morning with a spiritual drive journey in honour of the ancestors, followed by an official ceremony and remarks from invited speakers. Throughout the day, attendees participated in presentations, cultural performances, storytelling sessions and community discussions focusing on the significance of emancipation and the continued importance of preserving Statia’s heritage.
The afternoon and evening programme at the Johan Cruyff Court featured additional cultural performances, interactive panel discussions and a community awakening session before concluding with an evening celebration.
The annual observance brought together government representatives, community organizations, performers and residents in a shared commemoration of the island’s history, while also looking ahead to the ongoing journey toward empowerment, unity and cultural recognition.
