Kalian Sams returns to his roots: baseball star brings the world back to Statia

ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius – Professional baseball player Kalian Sams is visiting St. Eustatius for the first time, where he will meet with students, sports organisations and government representatives to discuss youth and sports development.

Sams, who has family roots on St. Eustatius, has had an international baseball career spanning 17 years. He represented the Netherlands in international competition and played in the organisations of several Major League Baseball teams.

During his visit, Sams will speak with primary and secondary school students under the theme “From Statia to the World,” discussing his experiences as a professional athlete and the importance of discipline, resilience, education and making positive choices.

He is also scheduled to meet with the St. Eustatius Sports Facilities Foundation (SSFF) and local sports clubs. Discussions will include coaching, sports facilities, athlete development and possibilities for connecting young athletes on Statia with expertise and opportunities abroad.

The visit is taking place as part of the government’s “Statia on the Map” initiative. Sams will also meet with the Executive Council to explore whether his experience and international network could contribute to longer-term mentorship, coaching and development opportunities for young athletes on the island.
