PHILIPSBURG – Experienced journalist and photographer Robert Luckock passed away Monday morning at the Sint Maarten Medical Center. Luckock worked for many years as a correspondent for The Daily Herald and was particularly well known for his coverage of the French side of Sint Maarten. His cause of death has not been disclosed.
The passing was reported Monday by St. Martin News Network. Further information about the circumstances of his death and funeral arrangements has not yet been provided.
Luckock followed the news for many years in areas including Marigot, Grand Case, French Quarter and Orient Bay. He wrote about politics, governance, tourism, shipping, accidents, protests and cultural and social events.
In addition to being a reporter, Luckock was a photographer. He typically appeared at events with his camera and supplied many of the photos published alongside his articles. His name also appears with recent photos on The Daily Herald’s website.
His work was of particular importance on an island divided between Dutch and French governance. Luckock brought news from the French-speaking community to the English-speaking readers on the Dutch side of the island, helping to capture events on both sides of the border as a single island story.
The Daily Herald listed Luckock as correspondent for St. Martin until his death. Throughout his long career, he became a familiar face at press conferences, public meetings and unexpected events across the island.
