KRALENDIJK – Opposition party M21 is calling on Island Governor John Soliano to take the initiative to appoint an independent mediator to break the political deadlock on Bonaire. This was outlined in a letter that faction leader Désirée Coffie sent to Governor John Soliano, dated July 31.
According to Coffie, public confidence in both the Island Council and the Executive College has been seriously damaged by the consecutive administrative crises of recent days. She warns that the situation could result in an administrative intervention under the WolBES, and states in her letter that this scenario must be avoided.
For this reason, M21 proposes appointing an independent, politically uncommitted mediator or mediation commission that can guide the conversations between the parties involved. Coffie also requests a personal meeting with the Governor to elaborate further on her proposal.
The call comes after coalition party UPB announced it no longer wishes to work with coalition partner MPB. According to UPB, the basis of trust has disappeared and MPB has not conducted itself as a reliable coalition partner. Bonaire has thus fallen into another administrative crisis, only days after the appointment of a new deputy had seemingly ended the previous deadlock.
Multiple internal conflicts
The current coalition of UPB, MPB and Fraction Serberie was formed approximately four months ago, but has since experienced various internal conflicts, including the departure of a deputy, prolonged negotiations over his successor, and ultimately another breakdown in the collaboration.
