ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius — In an unusually busy weekend for traffic enforcement, police on Sint Eustatius arrested two motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
At approximately 10:20 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, police attempted to stop a 40-year-old woman with the initials V.C.C. on James S. Rhoda Road following a report of possible drunk driving. The driver allegedly ignored the stop signal and fled, prompting a short pursuit.
According to police, the woman showed clear signs of intoxication — including disoriented behaviour — and was taken to the police station. Officers were unable to conduct a breath analysis due to her heavily intoxicated state. She was also unable to present any documents, which constitutes a separate offence.
At around 1:35 a.m. on Monday, July 20, a 34-year-old man with the initials W.C.R.R. was arrested on Charles A. Woodley Road after being involved in a traffic accident. A breathalyser test, conducted as per standard procedure for drivers involved in collisions, showed that he had exceeded the legal alcohol limit. His driving licence was confiscated.
Both suspects were taken to the police station for questioning and formal registration. It is not yet known whether they were released following initial processing. Police reports will be filed against both.
