THE HAGUE – The CDA presented its election manifesto "Building on Trust" today. The program notably pays considerable attention to the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom. The party wants to combat poverty, invest in infrastructure and strengthen cooperation with the autonomous countries.
According to the CDA, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba deserve additional support to reduce poverty among the elderly and families. The manifesto promises structural funding and a special growth fund for Bonaire, where the population is rapidly increasing.
Investing in infrastructure
Because the islands have limited resources and face development gaps, the party wants structural financing for maintenance and replacement of roads, utilities and other basic infrastructure.
Cooperation with Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten
For the autonomous countries in the Kingdom – Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten – the CDA is focusing on strengthened cultural and economic cooperation. The countries must also get their financial affairs in order and provide clearer accountability for how funds are spent.
The party emphasizes that the Netherlands bears responsibility for stability in the region. Therefore, the CDA wants to continue investing in defense capabilities and international exercises in the Caribbean area.
Difference with the PVV
It is notable that the CDA is taking a different stance than the PVV. Last week that party presented its plans, but they paid hardly any attention to the Caribbean islands.
