KRALENDIJK - In the early morning of Saturday, September 19, shots were fired at a police officer’s car in the Nikiboko neighborhood. The Caribbean Netherlands Police Corps (KPCN) found bullet impacts in the vehicle. The investigation is in full progress.
The central dispatch center received a report of a shooting incident in the Nikiboko area during the nighttime hours. On arrival, officers found bullet holes in a car belonging to a police officer.
Response from the chief of police
Chief of police Alwyn Braaf describes the incident as extremely serious. "Violence, threats and intimidation against police officers are completely unacceptable. Our officers must be able to do their jobs safely, without threats, intimidation or aggression," said Braaf.
The corps says it stands behind its employees and will continue to work to ensure their safety. "Nos no ta tolerá intimidashon," said Braaf, "We do not tolerate intimidation."
Illegal firearms
Braaf also drew attention to the presence of illegal firearms on the island. Possession and use of such weapons are, according to him, serious criminal offenses. The corps continues to focus on tracking down and removing illegal weapons from the streets.
"Anyone who uses violence against our employees, threatens or tries to intimidate them, will not discourage us," said Braaf. "We will continue our work and act with determination, within the bounds of the law, against those who cross those boundaries."
KPCN emphasizes that it will not tolerate any form of aggression, threats or use of weapons against officers or residents of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba.
According to the corps, the investigation is still in its early stages.
