ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius – The Caribbean Netherlands Police Force (KPCN) organized a safety and speed awareness session for fatbike and e-bike riders on St. Eustatius earlier this week, combining bicycle testing with road safety education for young riders and their parents.
The event took place on Monday, July 27, in front of the police station in Oranjestad, where officers installed a police roller test bench. The device allows police to safely measure the maximum speed of fatbikes and e-bikes to determine whether they comply with legal speed limits.
Between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., approximately 25 fatbikes and e-bikes were tested during the session.
In addition to carrying out the speed checks, police officers used the opportunity to educate participants about road safety. Riders were reminded that, under Caribbean Netherlands regulations, fatbikes and e-bikes may not exceed a maximum speed of 30 kilometres per hour. Officers also encouraged young people to apply the traffic rules and road safety lessons they learn at school whenever they are using public roads.
According to KPCN, the initiative was well received, with young riders responding enthusiastically and showing interest in having their bicycles tested on the roller bench.
The police described the event as both educational and engaging, saying it helped raise awareness of the responsible use of fatbikes and e-bikes while contributing to safer roads on St. Eustatius.
As the popularity of electric bicycles and fatbikes continues to grow across the Caribbean Netherlands, police have increasingly focused on education and prevention alongside enforcement to encourage safe use of these vehicles.
