KRALENDIJK – The Court of First Instance is expected to deliver its verdict today in the high-profile murder case surrounding Saba firefighter Sheldon Johnson.

Johnson was shot and killed on September 12, 2025, after returning home with his partner on Saba. The case, known as the Papaya case, has drawn significant attention across the Caribbean Netherlands and neighboring islands.

During the substantive hearing earlier this month, the Public Prosecution Service demanded prison sentences of 28 years for Anthony N.W. and 21 years for Rudolfo V.v.H. Prosecutors argued that Johnson’s killing was a carefully planned murder and presented evidence including surveillance footage, DNA traces, communications between the suspects, and statements made following their arrests.

Family members have gathered in Bonaire to be present when the verdict is announced. Others have remained on Saba and St. Eustatius, where dedicated viewing locations have been arranged to allow relatives, friends, and community members to follow the court proceedings via live video link.

The case has had a profound impact on Johnson’s family and the wider community. During the previous hearing, emotional victim impact statements were delivered by relatives and Johnson’s partner, who spoke about the lasting consequences of his death and the future that was taken away from them.

The defence has maintained that the evidence against the suspects is largely circumstantial and has requested acquittal on the murder charge. Both defendants continue to deny any involvement in the killing.

The verdict, scheduled for 1:30 p.m., is expected to bring a significant moment in a case that has been closely followed across Saba, St. Eustatius, Bonaire, and Sint Maarten.

More details will follow once the court has delivered its judgment.
