PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten – The Government of St. Maarten has issued a public health warning after a large number of dead fish were discovered in the channel connecting Fresh Pond and Great Salt Pond, near the Illidge Road roundabout.
According to the Ministry and Inspectorate of Public Health, Social Development and Labour (VSA), the cause of the fish die-off is still unknown. Authorities say the current heat and direct sunlight are accelerating the decomposition process, resulting in a strong and unpleasant odor.
Government crews are working to remove and safely dispose of the dead fish as quickly as possible and have asked the public for patience while the cleanup continues.
Not for consumption
The Inspectorate of VSA is also warning residents not to consume any fish taken from the affected area, whether dead or alive, as it may pose a serious health risk to both humans and animals. Consumers are advised to purchase fish only from established vendors where food safety inspections have been carried out.
