KRALENDIJK- Bonaire is changing rapidly. Increasing development, population growth and environmental challenges such as coral bleaching, erosion and declining water quality are placing growing pressure on the island’s ecosystems, both on land and at sea. In response, nature organisations on Bonaire have joined forces and are speaking with one voice through the Bonaire Nature Platform (BNP).
The Bonaire Nature Platform brings together organisations committed to the conservation, restoration and management of the island’s diverse ecosystems. By uniting organisations with different areas of expertise and experience, the platform aims to strengthen coordination and provide clearer guidance on what is needed to protect Bonaire’s natural environment.
The role of the BNP as a source of knowledge and as a discussion partner for government, local stakeholders and other decision-makers has been expanding. Since its establishment in 2022, the platform has been working with thematic task groups that bring together experts in nature conservation and restoration.
Within these task groups, members align on shared objectives, support one another’s initiatives and help shape direction on key themes such as ecosystem restoration, protection of native plants and animals, sustainable land and water management, and the long-term management of protected areas.
Healthier island
The members of the Bonaire Nature Platform meet on a monthly basis to discuss pressing environmental issues and to explore joint solutions and coordinated actions. Through this collaboration, the platform aims to contribute to a healthier and more resilient Bonaire, where both nature and the community can continue to thrive.
