DEVENTER – At the invitation of the Fund for Special Journalistic Projects (Fonds BJP), a group of Caribbean journalists participated in the Dutch Journalism Festival. During the second edition, held on 18 and 19 September in Deventer, the programme centred on climate journalism and cooperation within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The fund organised a panel discussion on how journalists report on climate change, whose consequences vary from region to region. Radinka Ustasia from Bonaire joined the conversation with Rajesh Chintaman of The Daily Herald on Sint Maarten, Oriana Wouters from Aruba, Maarten van Gestel of Trouw and Emma van Bergeijk of NU.nl. Journalist and author Milouska Meulens moderated the discussion.
Through the invitation and the programme, Fonds BJP aims to strengthen the exchange between Caribbean and European-Dutch journalists. According to executive director Joëlle Terburg, there are few opportunities for journalists from all six islands to meet one another as well as their European-Dutch colleagues. The fund hopes to lay the groundwork for lasting cooperation.
In addition, Martijn Hisschemöller recorded a special edition of the Bonairean radio programme Op de Klippen in Deventer. Panel members and other guests continued the conversation on the topic. According to the fund, the episode will be available to listen back within the coming days.
The festival attracted more than a thousand journalists, media makers and other attendees.
