
ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius — Five residents of St. Eustatius received Royal Decorations on Friday, April 24, during a ceremony at the Mike van Putten Youth Centre. The awards were presented by Island Governor Alida Francis on behalf of King Willem-Alexander, recognising longstanding voluntary contributions to the community.
Ingrid Filomena Whitfield was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau, while George Russell Courtar, Ramonia Othelia Hendrickson-Duinkerk, Leoncio Zhivago Lopes and Maldwyn Ogilvy Timber were each appointed Member in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
Governor Francis noted that the annual tradition honours individuals for their sustained and meaningful service to society, describing this year’s ceremony as one where “it rains ribbons” on St. Eustatius.
Whitfield was recognised for her pioneering role in public service and women’s empowerment. Courtar was honoured for decades of dedication to the Roman Catholic parish and community support. Hendrickson-Duinkerk was acknowledged for her work in volunteerism and cultural preservation, while Lopes was recognised for his contributions to youth development and music. Timber received recognition for more than 25 years of service in music, sound engineering and community engagement.
Caribbean Netherlands
Across the Caribbean Netherlands, a total of eight decorations were awarded this year. Bonaire saw three recipients, while no decorations were presented on Saba.
