THE HAGUE – During a committee debate of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Kingdom Relations, members of parliament discussed on Thursday the potential budget cuts that could also affect the Rijksdienst Caribisch Nederland (RCN). The agency is considered one of the largest employers on Bonaire.
Members of parliament voiced concerns about the impact on employment and subsidies. One question raised was: "The government-wide budget targets also affect RCN. What does this mean for employment on the islands and the subsidy funds available for that purpose?"
Concrete figures on the scale of the cuts are still lacking. The cabinet provided no clarity during the debate, leaving uncertainty about the consequences for the local economy.
The discussion took place in the broader context of financial security, with the vulnerable economic position of the islands at the centre of the debate.
