Satellite technology puts Bonaire on the map for sea rescue

KRALENDIJK — Bonaire now has its own Galileo Sensor Station — and it can save lives at sea. On Wednesday, the opening of the station was marked with a live demonstration showing how the system locates people in distress and coordinates their rescue.

During the demonstration, a person was placed in the water near the quay at Wilhelminapark. A distress signal was picked up by the Galileo satellite, which relayed it to the Coast Guard. Within minutes, a helicopter was dispatched to pull the ‘victim’ from the sea.

The demonstration drew considerable interest from onlookers, illustrating the significance of the new station for maritime safety in the region.
