ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius — Researchers from Wageningen University & Research are spending a month on St. Eustatius as part of a project that aims to map out possible futures for the island’s people and natural environment.
The research, known as "Towards a Positive Future for People and Nature", forms part of the Nature and Environment Policy Plan (NEPP) — a framework that guides how the Dutch Caribbean island manages and protects its natural surroundings.
Building on an initial visit last September, the team returned to deepen the dialogue with the local community. They are connecting with residents, listening to local perspectives, and visiting initiatives across the island that could serve as inspiration for sustainable development.
Goal
The goal of the collaboration is to gain a clearer picture of what a resilient and sustainable future for Statia could look like — one shaped not only by science, but by the voices of the people who live there.
