RINCON - After a month full of cultural activities, the traditional Parada Folklor kicked off on Wednesday evening in Rincon. Notable this year was that the parade was held for the first time not on the holiday itself, but a day before Dia di Rincon. Visitors from all parts of Bonaire made their way to the village to attend the procession.

The high turnout caused considerable traffic congestion on the way to Rincon. Motorists waited well over half an hour in traffic before reaching the village. Police reported that all vehicles and drivers had been checked in advance and that everyone met the required conditions. However, a brief interruption occurred at the start of the parade when two vehicles were damaged. Once they were replaced, the procession was able to continue.

Streets fill up

Once visitors arrived, the wait proved well worth it. The streets were traditionally packed with spectators, many of whom had brought folding chairs to secure a good spot. Stalls along the route did brisk business selling local food and drinks.

The parade itself again offered a familiar display of exuberant dancing and colourful, traditional costumes. Behind the outfits often lies weeks of preparation, which was clearly visible in the quality and detail of each entry.

Dia di Rincon

With this early start to the Parada Folklor, the stage is set for Dia di Rincon on 30 April. The day begins after the traditional church service with an official opening at 09:00 at Pleintje Broertje Janga, where the flag of Rincon is raised and the Bonairean national anthem is sung. After that, the festivities begin and the entire village is filled with music, dance and culture.
