KRALENDIJK – The long-discussed development of Bonaire’s port is gaining momentum once again. State Secretary Eric van der Burg confirms that talks are underway with international partners to enable investment.

During a briefing, he emphasized the importance of improved infrastructure: "We need to ensure that more traffic becomes possible, which could bring costs down."

According to the State Secretary, the current port situation is a contributing factor to the high prices on the island. He also pointed to the effect of limited competition: "You can see that monopolies also play a role in driving up prices."

The government is therefore looking at expanding the port, including through the addition of a container terminal. This is being pursued in collaboration with the European Union, which may be able to provide funding for the project.

The plans are still under development and no concrete start date has been announced. What is clear, however, is that the port plays a key role in reducing costs and improving Bonaire’s economic position.
