KRALENDIJK – With the unveiling of the construction sign, the official start of the new MBO school on Bonaire was marked on Friday. A long-awaited moment symbolizing an investment in the island’s future, according to Dieudonne van der Veen, director of the Fundashon Propiedat Inmobil Boneiru (FPIB).
The construction of the new educational facility has a long history, with delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and rising construction costs. Through collaboration between FPIB, the Public Entity Bonaire, and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW), an innovative and cost-efficient construction system was ultimately chosen, offering better insulation and reduced operational costs.
Milestone
According to OCW representative Maritsa Silberie, the groundbreaking represents a major milestone after thirteen years of preparation. “We’re not there yet, but today we celebrate a tangible success,” Silberie stated. Commissioner Nina den Heyer and MBO unit director MBO Unit director Liset Wolff also expressed her satisfaction with the start of the construction. The new complex will consist of five modern buildings and is expected to be completed in just over two years.
