Subsidy for ferry between Windward Islands extended until 2027, future remains uncertain

THE HAGUE – The ferry service between Sint-Maarten, Saba and Statia will continue operating through 2027 thanks to an extension of the Dutch government subsidy. This is evident from the progress report on economic development and self-reliance that State Secretary Van Marum sent to the House of Representatives.
The cabinet emphasizes that the ferry plays an important role in the accessibility of the Windward Islands, but warns that the future of the service remains uncertain.
The subsidy temporarily prevents the connection from being discontinued, but structural financing has not been arranged. This means that after 2027, a new decision must be made on whether the ferry service can continue to exist and under what conditions.
According to the cabinet, the accessibility of Saba and Statia remains vulnerable, as high ticket prices and limited transportation options are hampering economic development.
The ferry service was reintroduced after the pandemic to offer residents, students and entrepreneurs an affordable alternative to expensive and limited air travel.
Island residents have repeatedly pointed out in recent years the importance of a reliable connection with Sint Maarten, both for daily mobility and for tourism.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management is investigating possible solutions for structural financing together with the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations and other departments, but no decision has been made on this yet.
