KRALENDIJK – Bonaire welcomed the cruise ship Scenic Eclipse for the first time on Tuesday. The visit marks a new milestone in the island’s cruise programme.

The vessel arrived carrying 179 passengers and 196 crew members, under the command of Captain Erwan Le Rouzic. Upon arrival, the ship was given a warm welcome by the Tourism Corporation Bonaire (TCB), alongside the harbour master and shipping agent Maduro.

Ultra-luxury expedition yacht

The Scenic Eclipse is renowned as the world’s first ‘discovery yacht’, a type of cruise ship that combines luxury with expedition travel. The vessel accommodates a maximum of 228 guests, who stay in balcony suites with butler service.

What sets the ship apart is its ability to reach remote destinations. On board are two helicopters, a submarine, and smaller expedition vessels, allowing passengers to explore locations in a more intimate and personal way.

Bonaire’s strategic direction

According to TCB, this type of cruise visit aligns with Bonaire’s ambition to attract visitors who place a high value on nature and sustainability.

"The arrival of the Scenic Eclipse underscores Bonaire’s growing appeal within the niche segment of luxury and expedition cruising," says TCB director Elesiër Angel. "It strengthens our position as a destination known for its natural beauty and authenticity."

With the Scenic Eclipse’s inaugural call, Bonaire reaffirms its commitment to a more small-scale, quality-focused approach to tourism.
