Canadian travel agencies warn against Aruba and Curaçao

MONTREAL – Several Canadian travel agencies are advising their clients to exercise caution when traveling to Aruba and Curaçao for now. This follows increased geopolitical tensions in the region after recent U.S. military actions and threats directed at Venezuela and Cuba. These are recommendations from the travel industry; there is no official Canadian travel ban in effect for the islands.

According to Canadian media, travel organizations report that customers are reconsidering or postponing their plans due to fears of further escalation in the Caribbean region.

Flight Centre Travel Group Canada is seeing travelers seek alternatives such as Mexico, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic. Other agencies also indicate that uncertainty about safety and regional stability plays a role in cancellations and rebookings.

Proximity to Venezuela

The concerns focus primarily on Aruba and Curaçao’s proximity to Venezuela. Travelers are raising questions on social media about the safety of vacations in the region and about possible visible military presence. Some agencies are advising clients who are primarily looking for sun holidays to consider other destinations for now.

At the same time, airlines emphasize that their flights to Aruba and Curaçao continue as normal. WestJet, Air Transat, and Porter Airlines report no structural changes. Air Canada has issued a temporary travel advisory for Venezuela and surrounding regions, allowing travelers more flexible rebooking options, but this does not constitute a ban for Aruba or Curaçao.

No travel advisory

The Canadian government has also not issued a heightened travel advisory for the islands. The official advice remains that travelers should take normal safety precautions. This means the industry advice from some travel agencies is separate from formal government policy.
