ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius – Farmers, backyard gardeners and other residents with an interest in agriculture came together on Sunday, June 28, for the first Statia Growers Gathering.
The event was organized by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV) in collaboration with Made in Statia and focused on practical approaches to food production under the island’s dry climate.
Held under the theme “Growing More With Less Water,” participants exchanged ideas and experiences on topics including water conservation, soil health, mulching, irrigation techniques and improving drought resilience.
According to the organizers, the gathering is intended to become a community platform where both experienced growers and newcomers can share knowledge and discuss sustainable agricultural practices on St. Eustatius.
Additional sessions planned
The Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries said additional editions of the Statia Growers Gathering are planned. Interested residents can contact the department for information about future meetings.
