KRALENDIJK – Selibon expects to receive a total of four new garbage trucks by the end of October 2026. The vehicles have already been ordered and are intended to improve the capacity and reliability of waste collection on Bonaire.
The purchase follows on from the two trucks acquired in February to address capacity issues. In addition, investments have been made in spare parts, maintenance and other equipment as part of the emergency measures to stabilise the situation at Selibon and the Lagun landfill site.
In addition to the trucks, the heavy machinery fleet is being expanded with a wheel loader, a tipper truck, a landfill compactor and a crawler crane. The wheel loader has already been delivered; the remaining machines are expected in October. The Public Entity Bonaire has also released funds for improvements to the workshop, operations at the landfill, and the financial and operational situation of Selibon.
According to the OLB, the measures have reduced the nuisance experienced by local residents, including odour, pests and fire hazards. Deputy Dennis Martinus states that the board and Selibon will continue to work together to ensure an adequate and reliable collection service.
New transfer and sorting centre
Meanwhile, a study is under way to determine the best location for a new waste transfer and sorting centre. Now that the bulk of the emergency measures have been completed, the focus is gradually shifting towards long-term solutions.
