KRALENDIJK- An underwater archaeological survey has been carried out at the entrance of St. Eustatius Harbour as part of preparations for the planned extension of the harbour breakwater. The survey took place between 20 and 24 January and focused on waters northwest of, and alongside, the existing breakwater.

The work was conducted by The Shipwreck Survey team in cooperation with local underwater heritage specialists Taro Merkman, Fi de Wit, and Courtney van Rij. Local dive operator ScubAqua provided operational support. The survey aimed to identify any underwater cultural heritage and assess seabed conditions relevant to archaeological preservation.

According to the organizers, the survey was carried out in line with recognised professional and safety standards and caused minimal disruption to regular harbour activities. The results will be compiled into an advisory report from an underwater heritage perspective.

Decision-making

The report will be submitted to the Executive Council and is expected to inform further decision-making on the proposed breakwater extension, as well as future communication with the community.
