KRALENDIJK – Starting Sunday, October 11, the Police Force Caribbean Netherlands (KPCN) will carry out extra checks for weapons possession during the Regatta festivities. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) BES announced this in a press statement. To ensure the festivities are enjoyable and safe for everyone, the chief public prosecutor has issued an order for preventive searches.

The order gives the police the authority to check anyone in a designated area for weapons possession. This also applies to clothing, bags and luggage. Vehicles travelling in the area, such as cars, motorcycles and scooters, may also be checked. No suspicion or specific reason is required for a check.

Cooperation with a check is mandatory. Anyone who refuses commits a criminal offence and can be arrested and prosecuted.

The order applies in Playa (the downtown area) and in the neighbourhoods of Tera Kora, Den Tera and Nòrt Saliña, as laid down in the order. The checks will run from October 11, 2026 up to and including October 18, 2026, each day from 6:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. the following morning.

Camera surveillance

In addition, Island Governor John Soliano has issued a directive for camera surveillance. This means that camera surveillance will be deployed in the designated area.

This measure is part of the robust and integrated approach to illegal firearms possession. Anyone arrested with a firearm can expect strict action.
