Jonathan Schoop Released, but Remains Suspect in Weapons Investigation on Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD - Top baseball player Jonathan Schoop is no longer in custody but remains a suspect in a comprehensive investigation into illegal weapons possession. The Prosecutors Office in Curaçao lifted his detention on Tuesday.
Schoop was arrested in late January along with eight other individuals during police operations that involved raids at multiple locations. Firearms, ammunition, bullet casings, and knives were seized, including items found at the 34-year-old player’s residence. On February 11, his pretrial detention was extended by another sixty days.
According to his attorney, the detention has now been suspended. The Public Prosecutor’s Office confirms that Schoop has been released but will not make any further statements about the ongoing investigation. Schoop formally remains a suspect.
World Baseball Classic
Due to his detention, Schoop was not selected for the Dutch national baseball team that will participate in the World Baseball Classic next month. His older brother Sharlon Schoop is on the roster.
Jonathan Schoop played in Major League Baseball from 2013 to 2023 for teams including the Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins, and Detroit Tigers. He also regularly played for the Dutch national team and was active in last year’s European Championship in Rotterdam.
