KRALENDIJK- After two difficult years for Bonaire’s coral reefs, there are encouraging signs of recovery. According to the Climate Resilience Project team, continuous water temperature monitoring shows that sea temperatures have remained significantly cooler this year compared to 2023, resulting in far lower thermal stress on the reef.

Less than 10 percent of corals exhibited signs of heat stress such as paling or bleaching, and researchers report that affected colonies are already regaining their color. The findings suggest that reef systems are currently recovering well after recent periods of elevated heat.

STINAPA Park managers note that the results highlight the value of ongoing monitoring and collaboration within the Bonaire National Marine Park. Efforts include tracking temperature changes and assessing coral health to better understand, and respond to, environmental pressures.

Positive trend

While challenges remain for reef conservation globally, project coordinators say this positive trend strengthens their commitment to safeguarding Bonaire’s coral ecosystems together with partners and the wider community.
