KRALENDIJK – For the first time since 2022, boulder brain corals (Colpophyllia natans) have spawned on Bonaire’s reefs, resulting in the arrival of baby corals. The rare event was documented earlier this month in the King Willem-Alexander Marine Reserve with support from STINAPA Bonaire.
The species has suffered sharp declines in recent years due to heatwaves and stony coral tissue loss disease, leaving only a handful of colonies along the island’s west coast.
Crucial
Scientists stress that breeding and raising these corals is crucial to restore genetic diversity and strengthen reefs against the impacts of climate change.
