THE BOTTOM – On October 27 and 28, Saba celebrated the launch of the Kompa Nanzi book, part of a Kingdom-wide literacy and cultural initiative supported by the Dutch Foundation for Literature and Landhuis Bloemhof in Curaçao. The project highlights Anansi, the well-known Caribbean folk character whose stories carry wit and moral lessons.
On October 27, Culture Department staff, culture coaches, and Queen Wilhelmina Library representatives met to discuss how Kompa Nanzi stories can be included in cultural programming. That afternoon, elders at the Saba Life Center shared fond memories of growing up with Anansi tales, followed by a Story Time event at the Queen Wilhelmina Library attended by around 60 children. During the event, the book was officially presented to Commissioner of Culture Eviton Heyliger.
On October 28, copies were handed out to the Sacred Heart Primary School, the Saba Comprehensive School, and the Child Focus Foundation, with teachers and program leaders discussing how to integrate the material into lessons and after-school activities.
Promoting literacy
In total, around 80 hardcopy books were distributed, marking another step in promoting literacy, storytelling, and cultural heritage on Saba.
