KRALENDIJK – Yesterday, on World Alzheimer’s Day, the Public Entity Bonaire (OLB) drew attention to people living with dementia and their loved ones. On Bonaire, the person comes first, not the disease. Someone with dementia has their own life story, wishes and abilities.
The OLB is developing a dementia policy plan for the entire island, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) and Care and Youth Caribbean Netherlands (ZJCN). Various organisations from the healthcare and welfare sector, including Fundashon Alzheimer Bonaire and Stichting Mantelzorg Bonaire, are involved in this process. A Dementia Care Pathway is also being developed and will soon be made available on the OLB website.
The OLB also provides subsidies to Fundashon Alzheimer Bonaire (FAB), including support for an information and consultation service on dementia. FAB celebrates its 15th anniversary this year and has been committed throughout to raising awareness, sharing knowledge and supporting people with dementia and their families.
Yesterday, the FAB board presented the World Alzheimer Report 2026 to Deputy Silberie, a tradition the foundation upholds every year.
"A community where people with dementia can continue to participate requires understanding and attention from everyone. By recognising dementia and talking about it, we can help create an environment where people with dementia and their loved ones feel supported", the OLB stated in a press release on Monday.
