KRALENDIJK – The Public Entity of Bonaire (OLB) is making $6 million available to temporarily reduce electricity rates on Bonaire. Water and Energy Company Bonaire (WEB) will apply the amount as an additional discount on the variable electricity rate. The discount applies only to the last months of 2026.
For postpaid customers, the variable usage rate will decrease by $0.1097 per kilowatt-hour. The rate thus drops from $0.5021 to $0.3924 per kWh. The discount is applied to electricity consumption from September through December 2026. The relevant invoices will be sent between October 2026 and January 2027.
This is therefore a temporary reduction in electricity costs. The measure is financed by the $6 million that the OLB is making available as a rate subsidy.
According to the OLB, the subsidy is intended to make energy more affordable, support residents’ purchasing power and protect livelihood security on Bonaire.
Higher discount for Pagabon
Customers who use Pagabon will also temporarily receive a lower electricity price. For these prepaid customers, the rate will be reduced from $0.6642 to $0.5179 per kWh from 1 October through 31 December 2026.
This amounts to a discount of $0.1463 per kWh. Per kWh, Pagabon customers thus receive 33 percent more discount than postpaid customers during this period. WEB emphasizes that this difference arises because the subsidy is applied over different periods for the two groups.
Customers should be aware that the discount is not yet visible on the invoice sent at the end of September, which mainly relates to electricity consumption in August. Postpaid customers will see the discount for the first time on the invoice that largely relates to consumption in September.
The rate reduction will remain in effect through December 2026 for the time being. From 2027, this temporary subsidy will no longer apply, unless a new arrangement is made.
