KRALENDIJK - The Scholengemeenschap Bonaire (SGB) fell victim to an international ransomware attack on February 17th. One of the school’s data servers was compromised, resulting in the theft of some stored archive files.
The affected server had limited use and primarily contained archive data. Which specific data was stolen is still under investigation.
The Cyber Team of the Caribbean Netherlands Police Force (KPCN) and Europol are involved in the investigation. SGB has filed a report with the KPCN and submitted a notification to the BES Personal Data Protection Supervisory Commission.
Security Measures
The school emphasizes that standard security measures were already in place, including multi-factor authentication, firewalls, and secure login procedures. However, the targeted attack could not be prevented.
Regular educational activities have not been disrupted. Since SGB operates in a secure cloud environment, systems such as Magister, AFAS, Zermelo, Eduarte, and Microsoft Office were not affected. According to the school, user data and passwords were not stolen.
SGB states it will provide further information to those involved once there is more clarity about the scope of the stolen data
