THE BOTTOM, Saba — The newly established Monuments Council of Saba has officially begun its work, following an introductory meeting held on April 21.
The session marked the next step after the Public Entity Saba announced the creation of the council on March 3, aimed at strengthening the protection of the island’s cultural and historical heritage.
The meeting brought together members of the Working Group for Monuments, including Lukas van der Steen, Shaigan Marten and Sharifa Balfour, alongside the appointed council members: Teddy Johnson, Olga Simmons, Glenn Holm, Michael Newton and Nanette de Jong. Marten will serve as coordinator and liaison between the public entity and the council.
During the meeting, members were briefed on the structure, responsibilities and functioning of the Monuments Council, which will play an advisory role on heritage-related matters. Discussions also covered meeting schedules and the council’s role in representing the interests of the Saban community.
Formalize heritage protection
The council forms part of broader efforts to formalise heritage protection on the island, including the identification, designation and conservation of monuments. It is expected to contribute to safeguarding Saba’s historic sites, architecture and cultural landscape, while supporting responsible development.
