ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius — St. Eustatius welcomed Thom de Graaf, Vice President of the Council of State, on Sunday for an official farewell visit focused on key development projects on the island.
De Graaf and his delegation were received at F.D. Roosevelt Airport by Acting Government Commissioner Sharon Hassell, before visiting several major project sites. Representatives of the Project & Program Management Office (PPMO) provided updates on the ongoing Cliff Project and harbour renovation, both considered important for the island’s infrastructure development.
The delegation also toured Fort Oranje, where updates were given on heritage preservation efforts under the Region Deal programme. The visit concluded at the Emergency Operations Center, where discussions were held with members of both the Island Council and the Executive Council.
De Graaf, who previously visited the island in March 2025 to review housing and road projects, remains closely familiar with developments on Statia.
Formal reception
The day ended with a formal reception in his honour, where Commissioner Rechelline Leerdam expressed appreciation for his longstanding engagement with the island. Acting Governor Hassell presented him with a commemorative gift marking his service.
