KRALENDIJK – The Caribbean Netherlands Correctional Institution (JICN) has decided to close its internal shop, Toko Lenny, as of January. The decision followed an evaluation and was based on operational and business considerations.

Toko Lenny formed part of JICN’s work program, which focuses on providing inmates with job experience and preparing them for reintegration into society. While that objective remains unchanged, the activities will now take a different form. Non-perishable goods from the shop, such as shaving foam, will be donated to the food bank, while food items will be used in the institution’s kitchen. The former shop space will be converted into a repackaging center for the kitchen, where cold meals will be assembled.

According to JICN, the new setup offers meaningful and educational work for clients and is considered both cost-effective and sustainable. It also strengthens labor activities within the facility and creates room to invest in improved facilities, tools, and potentially additional work placements for clients.

External suppliers

With the closure of the shop, grocery orders for clients will once again be handled through external suppliers, as was previously the case.
