ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius – A total of 573 kilograms of goat meat was distributed to the community of St. Eustatius in May as part of the island’s invasive species control program, according to figures released by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.
The meat was obtained through controlled harvesting activities aimed at reducing the island’s free-roaming goat population. Government data show that 102 goats were harvested during the month, with approximately 70 percent of the meat returned to the community.
Environmental management and food security
The Public Entity St. Eustatius said the program supports both environmental management and food security by increasing the availability of locally sourced food. The initiative forms part of the Nature and Food Security Policy (NFSP) and the Strategic Action Plan for Sustainable Agriculture.
