SCHIPHOL - Some checked luggage from travelers is being left behind on Friday at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport due to a malfunction in the baggage system. The disruption affects departure hall 2, where suitcases must be checked in manually.
Due to the slow manual process, not all suitcases can accompany their flights. Passengers themselves can still depart normally on their scheduled flights.
"We find this very unfortunate for the travelers and airlines experiencing inconvenience from this. We are working hard to resolve the disruption," Schiphol reports on its website. It remains unclear when the system will be fully operational again.
The airport advises travelers to carry important items such as medications in their carry-on luggage. Schiphol is deploying extra staff to get as many suitcases on board as possible. Left-behind baggage will be forwarded as quickly as possible in cooperation with the airlines.
With approximately seventy thousand departing passengers, Friday is a "busy day" at Schiphol, according to a spokesperson. However, this number is lower than during the busiest summer day, when eighty-six thousand travelers departed.
