KRALENDIJK – Island Commissioner Dennis Martinus spoke with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management on Friday, 2 October, about Bonaire’s road programme. A key topic of the meeting was the sand roads in existing neighbourhoods. The Public Entity of Bonaire (OLB) says it is working on addressing these roads as part of a broader road plan.
“Good roads are essential for daily life. Residents must be able to reach their homes, their schools and their workplaces safely, without nuisance from dust, mud and water,” says Martinus.
In the plan, the island government is mapping out which roads need to be tackled, what the priorities and costs are, and for which works funding is still needed. The plan forms the basis for further talks with the Netherlands on additional funding.
Maintenance, drainage and road safety are also part of the plan. Where possible, space for pedestrians and cyclists will also be considered. The Public Entity also wants to provide a clearer picture of the roads that will be addressed and of the schedule.
Talks with the ministry will continue once the road plan has been further developed.
