KRALENDIJK – The Health Council has advised against introducing a dengue vaccination program at this time for the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. This means that no general vaccination program will be implemented on Bonaire for the time being. However, the advice does not mean that vaccination against dengue is not possible for residents of Bonaire.

Residents who wish to get vaccinated at their own expense, or who would like more information, can make an appointment with the GGD Bonaire / Public Health Service department of the Public Entity Bonaire.

The dengue vaccine Qdenga® is registered in Europe for individuals aged four and older. It consists of a series of two vaccinations with a three-month interval. Vaccination is possible after you have received all the relevant information and the GGD Bonaire physician sees no medical objections. It is not necessary to be tested for a previous dengue infection.

For people who have previously had dengue, vaccination can offer additional protection, as a second infection can be more severe than the first. For people who have never had dengue, there are both advantages and disadvantages to vaccination.

Information and appointment

During the consultation, you will be fully informed about the above points. You will also be advised that the vaccine may offer less protection against certain variants of the dengue virus and that the exact duration of the vaccine’s protection is not yet known.

Mosquito control and preventing mosquito bites remain the most important ways to prevent dengue. Vaccination can provide additional protection for certain individuals, but does not replace these measures.

GGD Bonaire closely monitors dengue developments on Bonaire and in the surrounding countries and islands. Scientific developments are also followed closely. You can always turn to GGD Bonaire for expert advice.
