KRALENDIJK – The Reef Renewal Foundation Bonaire (RRFB) says construction of its new Coral Lab is progressing rapidly, with key systems now being installed and the facility beginning to take shape.

Over the past week, RRFB staff have been working alongside the Aquatic Innovations team to build out the lab. Tanks, filtration and piping systems are currently being installed, while the outdoor layout — including runways and a deck — is also under development.

According to RRFB, the goal is to begin pilot coral breeding operations as early as next month. The first species expected to be cultivated is grooved brain coral.

The Coral Lab is intended to significantly expand Bonaire’s reef restoration capacity. In addition to coral breeding, the facility will support micro-fragmentation, research, and educational activities.

Financial support

The project has been made possible with support from the Openbaar Lichaam Bonaire and Dutch ministries through the “Nos ta biba di naturalesa” program.
