Kralendijk – Reef Renewal Foundation Bonaire has begun work on a new land-based coral nursery facility, marking a next step in expanding coral restoration efforts on the island.

The facility, which is being set up at Buddy Dive Resort, will serve as a base for coral breeding and research. A container housing the lab has recently been transported to the site with support from Dan Andres, and preparations are now underway for installation.

In the coming months, the organization will focus on equipping the lab with essential infrastructure, including electrical systems, piping and water tanks, before trial operations can begin.

According to Reef Renewal, the land-based facility will make it possible to grow and fragment coral species under controlled conditions, while also testing their resilience. The lab is expected to complement existing reef restoration work in the water.

In addition, the site will function as a hub for research and education, welcoming students, scientists and regional partners.

Support

The project is supported by the Public Entity Bonaire (PEB) and Dutch ministries through the Nos Ta Biba di Naturalesa programme.
