THE BOTTOM, Saba- A study executed by the experts of the company Deltares, commissioned by the Public Entity Saba, reveals that groundwater is the main route by which nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus reach the island’s coastal waters.
This influx, largely from wastewater in cesspits, poses risks to Saba’s fragile coral reefs, which are highly sensitive to excessive nutrient levels.
The research, the first of its kind on Saba, highlights the need for improved monitoring and stronger land and water management. While historic goat overpopulation also contributed to nutrient loads, recent management efforts have reduced that pressure.
Safeguarding ecosystems
The island government is urged to focus on wastewater and other sources to safeguard the island’s marine ecosystems.
